Natural Park Medvednica has been founded on September 16th, 1981 on the basis of specific law issued by the Croatian Parliament. The area of the natural park Medvednica is 22.826 ha. Basic phenomenon are well preserved natural forests and forest communities, that cover 14.550 ha or 64% of the park. Other areas of the park are covered with fruit trees, vineyards, agriculture and villages on the park margins. Public institution “Natural Park Medvednica” manages the Natural Park Medvednica. It has been founded by the act of Croatian Government on the 8th of September 1998 (N. N. 118/98). Public institution has three employees and it is situated in the forest house Bliznec near the park entrance.

Medvednica is oriented in the southwest-northeast direction and its southern slopes reach to the center of the city. Besides its exceptional ecological meaning for Zagreb, Mt. Medvednica is a huge forest and recreational area that attracts corresponding attention of the 1.5 million population living in the city and surrounding Zagrebacka and Krapinsko-zagorska district. It is especially interesting for the mountaineers and other naturalists. Mt. Medvednica covers 270 km2 and its highest peak Sljeme has an elevation of 1035 m. Beautiful view from Sljeme reaches to Zagreb, Hrvatsko zagorje (picturesque hilly region north of Zagreb) and even Slovenian Alps.
BOUNDARIES OF THE NATURAL PARK
Park boundaries follow the closed road ring: from the bridge over river Krapina, Podsused and Jablanovec towards Donja Bistra and Gornju Bistra and further over Galekovici, Kraljev vrh and Strmec to the new road Stubicke toplice -Sljeme-Zagreb, through village Pila, and Stubicke Toplice towards Donja Stubica and Gornja Stubica (including Seljacka Buna, memorial area), from Gornja Stubica over Matej to Laz passage, then down Kasina road to the crossing for Vugrovec and over Vugrovec, Goranec, Cucerje, Hulec, Slanovec and Markusevacka Trnava, towards, Markusevac, Bacun, Bliznec, Kraljevac, Sestine, Luksic, Mikulic, Krvaric and Borcec, over Zelena magistrala towards Bizek, Goljak, Dolje and Podsused to the beginning point at the bridge over river Krapina. |
